Anyone heard anything about the new edition of shadowrun coming out?

Shadowrun FanPro Site

I've been wanting to start up a new shadowrun campaign. While surfing for ideas, I discovered the new edition is supposed to be out. Unfortunately, my local bookstores are at a loss as to why they haven't received a copy yet, and amazon.com can't get it to me any sooner than the end of november.

Anyone seen or heard anything about the new edition? Is it worth getting? At first, I wanted to check it out, but then I realized that there aren't many things released for the new system since it's so new (e.g. character generators). But maybe the new system is worth it?

a few upcoming changes i could get from the site:

attributes have been reworked, such as splitting intelligence into intuition and logic, and quickness into agility and reaction

the priority system is gone, and replaced with a point system

there is no longer a distinction between riggers and deckers (now called hackers). so you now have hackers that can focus on drones, vehicles, the matrix, etc. (or any combination)

also, it seems there's a new archetype: a technomancer? i might have this completely wrong, but i through i read somewhere about a new tradition of magic that is used in the matrix, complete with summons and everything

Interesting....

The boyfriend is a long-time Shadowrun fan. He'll be glad to hear of this, and might actually run that Shadowrun campaign he's been threatening to do for so long.

I'm actually a little hesitant of the FanPro rebuild, I've been following it's lead up but as of yet I haven't seen the finish product.

The only experience that I have had with Shadowrun was VERY bad. So, I have never looked at it beyond a passing glance.

I don't even see 4th edition listed at Do or Dice.

EN World seems to have it.

oh no, what went wrong? reason i was looking into shadowrun again was because my likely gaming group (which live in new york! i have to travel to play games) thought call of cthulhu characters were too weak and spent too much time running instead of fighting. what didnt you like? i'm trying to plan ahead

I played Shadowrun once, as a teen (so, mid 90s-ish), but I didn't really get a strong impression of it, I guess.

I really enjoyed tabletop RPGs, and honestly, I think I'd give up my MMOs if I could have a weekly D&D session (or other RPG). I miss the stories and the socialization, more than anything.

The GM made all of our characters for us.

I should have run then, but I didn't. He really didn't know what he was doing, we really weren't that involved and it was boring. Since it was my first impression, it stuck.

I recently picked up SR4. I've never played anything in the line before, and while I find the system a little unweildy, man, do I want to stomp about Seattle.

Long time Shadowrun obsessive here. Have all but a very few of the books from first edition on, and almost all of the Earthdawn stuff.

Best setting ever.

Do NOT like fourth edition... glosses over too much which has come before, and for someone as invested in the setting as I, that's just not ok.

My friends and I played around with 2nd Edition way back when, and although we liked it, we just weren't willing to sacrifice the AD&D time. (Loved the SNES game though (IMG:http://gamers.experimentations.org/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) )

Flash forward to a few months ago when our old DM said "I really fancy a game of Shadowrun". I've got to say that I was shocked and appalled by 4th Ed. Hate it. We decided that we'd go as far as 3rd Ed, but we're disregarding 4th Ed as though it hasn't happened - and for our characters, it hasn't.

Why? What's wrong with 4ed? Mind you the last time I touched an SR book was when it was a paperback release, most probably initial release.

As a long time lover of the Shadowrun Universe, I can't agree with most of the people in here say that they don't like it. But then again, they are entitled to their opinion.

As for me, I like the new system. It has streamlined everything that has been a pain in the butt to run since 1st Ed. came out.

Characters are now built using a solid point based system. Magic spells are no longer bought at a certain force rating, but instead cast at a rating the mage defines (within limits, of course). Running the Matrix can now be done along side the other players instead of a separate game session by itself.

As for the new "Class", the Technomancer, aka Otaku, was introduced in 3rd Ed, and flushed out for 4th. Though a Hacker with a custom link will still give the Technomancer a run for their money.

The only thing that I don't like about it, is that you can only start off with 250,000 Nuyen max. But that is balanced by the prices being cheaper than before as well.

My recommendation, if your a new player to the SR Universe, start with 4ed. Otherwise, don't knock it till you've tried it.

From what I could gather it's a bit streamlined. Whether that's good or bad, we'll see in a few weeks when I start a campaign. I'm a little nervous running it since I've never run a 4th edition before. But I know the group dynamic pretty well and everyone else is fairly/completely new to it. I just hope I don't end up ruining it for everyone. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Neat to hear of tabletop gamers in the NYC area; I haven't played tabletop anything since high school (1980's!). I remember wanting to get into Shadowrun when it was started, but I'd left those games by then. I do very fondly remember the Genesis Shadowrun game, and have lots of cool memories of how you could do matrix runs in that.

Is there room for an occasional gaymer in the NYC group? That probably messes up the group dynamics.
